US top social media network Facebook admitted Friday that the accounts of 29 million users have been illegally accessed by attackers in the latest cyber attack it announced last month.
The world's largest social media announced on Sept 28 that attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook's code that would allow hackers to steal access tokens used by Facebook users as login digital keys and then take control of their accounts.
The company said its security engineers discovered on Tuesday that "attackers exploited a vulnerability in Facebook' s code that impacted "View As," a feature that lets people see what their own profile looks like to someone else.
Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg said Friday in his Facebook account that the company had fixed the security vulnerability Thursday night to "prevent this attacker or any other from being able to steal additional access tokens.
"The rise of AI capabilities provides new opportunities for attackers to create malware that hides from detection while hunting down targets," she said.
"These moves pose significant threats for incumbent banks, as these attackers have momentum in scaling innovative business models centered on data collection and the application of advanced analytics to identify new revenue opportunities and make smart lending decisions," he said.
While clarifying that the duration, platform, type and harm caused related to cybersecurity cases should be provided in timely reports, it also stipulates that a preliminary analysis of the incident, including information on suspected attackers, attack pathways and existing vulnerabilities, as well as what measures have been taken, also needs to be reported.
