Beijing's western Shijingshan district set up a 230-sq-m ice rink at the sports services exhibition area.

As the 2022 Winter Olympics is fast approaching, the rink offered a variety of activities such as ice hockey and ice sledging to stir up people's enthusiasm, organizers said.

Since the beginning of summer, Zhang Wei, who lives in Shanghai, has taken his six-year-old son to an ice rink in Shaoxing, East China's Zhejiang province, several times, taking high-speed trains to make the day trip.

"More and more people flock to the ice rink in the summer and on weekends in recent years," said Zhang, adding that he often arranges family journeys to ski in more distant places like Changbai Mountain in Northeast China's Jilin province.

Beijing's Shichahai ice rink, for example, saw searches for the venue as a Spring Festival holiday destination on the agency's platform increase by 76 percent compared with the same period last year.

Her son, who is only two years old, has already savored sporting activities in an ice rink in Shanghai.

The upcoming Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have fueled interest in winter sports, as evidenced by the large number of people browsing related products and queuing up to try the alpine skiing simulators and skate on the artificial ice rink at the fourth China International Import Expo in Shanghai.

The Bank of China, the official partner of the Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games as well as the CIIE, has also set up a 1,200-square-meter exhibition area comprising a virtual reality skiing simulator, an artificial ice rink and experience zones for sports like curling and ice hockey.

At the end of 2019, a brand-new ice hockey rink and a curling arena, equipped with professional facilities, was opened to public in the provincial capital Xining.

As school athletes, Wang and 20-plus teammates practice speed skating on a cornfield-turned ice rink at Taipingzhuang Central School in Beijing's Yanqing district.
