In 2013 Elion won the Global Dryland Champion Award, a prize given out by the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification.

For years, local governments had battled to find ways to counter desertification.

"On the one hand, we promote green development through measures such as expanding afforestation and curbing desertification.

- Luo Wenmei, a resident of Qingshan village in Southwest China's Guizhou province, felt lucky to join the local project of planting Sichuan pepper in the mountainous area which used to suffer from stony desertification.

Photovoltaic power generation not only saves energy and reduces carbon emissions, but also helps with soil and water conservation on barren hills and prevents the expansion of desertification, Tian added.

As an important ecological security barrier, Gansu shoulders the responsibility of conserving water that runs into the country's biggest rivers, fighting desertification and protecting biological diversity.

"The Chinese are ahead in the fight against desertification.

"Here in Mauritania, we are suffering from desertification, low rainfall and the impact of climate change.

According to a report in People's Daily, China's technological development in agricultural water conservation, modern animal husbandry and desertification prevention and control are highly compatible with the needs of many Arab states.

Xia Guocai, a former official of the NDRC, said: "After years of rapid economic development, the ecological environment has previously been severely damaged and polluted, and ecological disasters such as land desertification, land salinization, soil erosion and forest resource destruction have seriously threatened the survival and development of human society.

The province has an advantage in new energy, with 100,000 square km of desertification land suitable for the construction of photovoltaic and wind power farms.

China's fight against desertification started decades ago.

In 1988, Elion Resources Group started combating desertification as part of China's greening efforts of the vast Kubuqi desert.

Construction of wind and solar power projects also helps with the process of fighting desertification.

"Many projects in such areas also assume responsibilities like fighting desertification, improving local ecologies and the environment, as well as boosting the regional economy, which add to project difficulties," Lin said.

"The agricultural cooperation between the two countries is mainly focused on technological collaboration, such as exchanging seed resources, joint breeding, desertification control and soil erosion prevention, Zhang said.

The China International Development Cooperation Agency and the National Forestry and Grassland Administration signed a framework agreement on Friday with the Mongolian government on supporting Mongolia's "Plant a Billion Trees" plan and conducting collaborative efforts in desertification control.

The China-Mongolia Desertification Prevention and Control Cooperation Center was also established and will serve as a vital platform for joint efforts in combating desertification.

That's why we need to build a community with a shared future to jointly tackle common challenges such as desertification and climate change," Bat-Ulzii said.

Both sides have expressed their readiness to cooperate with each other in preventing desertification and protecting wildlife.

The percentage of vegetation cover in Sanjiangyuan had reached 67.3 percent by 2020, with the percentage of land in severe and medium-level desertification down by 5.6 percentage points over the past decade.

"The stability of the ecological system still faces severe challenges, and issues such as grassland degradation, land desertification, soil erosion, and ice and snow melting remain prominent," he said.

The notice forbids the cultivation of arable land in areas of desertification or with serious soil erosion, fragile ecology, severe pollution or any other conditions that would make it difficult to restore.
