"The successful gas drilling in the Sichuan basin's volcanic stratum proves geologists' judgment that abundant gas is contained in the Sichuan basin's thick volcanic stratum," said Han Xiaoping, chief analyst with China Energy Net Consulting.

The one in the Sichuan basin, first detected in 2017, is among the largest.

China National Offshore Oil Corp, the country's largest offshore oil and gas producer, will join efforts with nine foreign oil giants to conduct exploration in the Pearl River Mouth Basin, Guangdong province.

According to CNOOC, exploration will take place in Block A and B in the Pearl River Mouth Basin.

PowerChina is developing a full basin cascade hydropower project at that site.
